Keeper of the Castle

What seems a long time ago there were positive messages sent from not just American leaders but also entertainers. One of those positive messages came in the 1972 song "Keeper of the Castle" as performed by the Four Tops:

Live it down
There's a lot of us been pushed around
Red, yellow, black, white and brown
With a tear of their own
Can't you see
While you're pickin' on society
That the leaves on your family tree
Are callin' you to come home.

You're the keeper of the castle
So be a father to your children
The provider of all their daily needs
Like a sovereign lord protector
Be their destiny's director
And they'll do well to follow where you lead.

In your head
You don't believe what the good book said
You're gonna strike out now instead
'Cause the world's been unkind
Through thick and thin
Whatever shape your heart is in
You only have one next of kin
Better keep 'em in mind.

You're the keeper of the castle
So be a good man to your lady
The creator of the sunshine in her day
'Tend the garden that you seeded
Be a friend when a friend is needed
And you won't have to look the other way.

No one has much in the way of positive to say about the 70's what with the humiliation of America in Vietnam, Watergate, stagflation, gas lines, and on and on. Despite of all the turmoil of the time the message in "Keeper of the Castle" rings as true today as it did back when it was first performed. No matter how much time passes it serves as a reminder that faith and a strong sense of individual responsibility trump race and gender politics, grand socialist inspired government programs, feel-good pop psychology, and moral relativism.

That the American people have such a low opinion of elected officials should not be surprising based upon their perception that most of these officials have turned their back on hope and spinelessly serve their own special interests while refusing to accept responsibility for their craven actions. Americans know the fix is in. They to a great extent feel powerless to do anything about it. Politicians speak about Americans in the third-person. It is as if they only exist in the abstract as objects from which more tax revenue is to be squeezed. More Americans than ever identify themselves as being independent. But is declaring oneself independent enough to make any difference when politicians pay attention to them only during elections then proceed to marginalize or ignore them at all other times?

How can one be a keeper of the castle when all messages sent by politicians, entertainers, and other so called trend setters say you don't matter and in fact we will do everything we can to forcibly take what you have and either keep it for ourselves or give it to someone else? The barbarians are at the gate urged on by those who care only about themselves and not about the American way of life. How long will the politicians push before Americans push back?
